Are you in the market for a new crossover or SUV in Sioux Falls, SD? Whether you’re growing family needs a larger vehicle or you’re looking to downsize to a more fuel-efficient option, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander and 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport are two stylish, budget-friendly SUVs in their respective classes. For those who may not be as familiar with the Mitsubishi SUV lineup, you may be wondering what the difference is between Outlander and Outlander Sport. While both of these SUVs would make terrific family vehicles, they also have their fair share of similarities and differences. If you’re shopping for a new SUV in the Sioux Empire, let Vern Eide Mitsubishi compare the 2022 Outlander vs. 2022 Outlander Sport to help you make an informed decision.
All 2022 Outlander models come standard equipped with a 2.5L MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve-timing Electronic Control) 4-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This powertrain is capable of generating up to 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike Outlander, the 2022 Outlander Sport offers a couple of different powertrain options. The first is a standard 2.0L MIVEC inline 4-cylinder engine that teams up with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), a system that will produce up to 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The second powertrain is an available 2.4L version of the MIVEC found onboard GT and GT Special Edition trims, capable of 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque.
From the Outlander ES to the Outlander SEL Special Edition, every 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander trim level can be equipped with available Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) which allows for a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds. Not only does S-AWC increase traction during slippery road conditions, but Mitsubishi’s new Trailer Stability Assist maximizes towing safety in the most challenging situations.
Although the base 2022 Outlander Sport S model only allows for a two-wheel drive (2WD) configuration, all other trim levels can be outfitted with available Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) and both the GT and GT Special Edition come standard with the S-AWC all-wheel drive system. However, towing is not recommended for the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
Is the Mitsubishi Outlander bigger than the Outlander Sport? Yes, the 2022 Outlander belongs to the midsize SUV segment and has the following exterior dimensions:
The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is classified as a compact SUV, making it smaller than its Outlander sibling. Outlander Sport carries the following exterior dimensions:
Every 2022 Outlander trim level features a three-row interior with a passenger volume of 125.5 cubic feet and seating for up to seven passengers. There is 41.7 inches of front legroom, 39.9 inches 2nd-row legroom, and 18.7 inches of legroom in the 3rd row. All 2022 Outlander models also come outfitted with split-fold seating, allowing for up to 79.7 cubic feet of max cargo space (78.3 cu. ft. on SEL and above).
As the exterior dimensions showed, the 2022 Outlander is larger than the 2022 Outlander Sport and of course, this continues inside the cabin. However, don’t let its compact size fool you; Outlander Sport still boasts a seating capacity of up to five passengers and 36.3 inches of rear legroom. Similar to Outlander, the 2021 Outlander Sport also has rear seat folding functionality, expanding its cargo area up to 49.5 cubic feet.
Even at its base ES trim level, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander comes loaded with standard amenities and features like Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control, Bluetooth Wireless Technology, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Mitsubishi Connect, and Remote Keyless Entry. As shoppers move up the trim level ladder, other available 2022 Outlander features include:
The 2022 Outlander Sport base model is equally as impressive when it comes to features with amenities and tech like a 7.0″ Display Audio, HD Radio, Bluetooth Wireless Technology, Automatic Climate Control, and Remote Keyless Entry. When shoppers upgrade to trim levels like SE and GT, other available 2022 Outlander Sport features include:
Both Outlander and Outlander Sport feature Mitsubishi’s RISE body construction and carry a host of airbags and head restraints. Additionally, every 2022 Outlander comes standard equipped with Active Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, and a rearview camera. Advanced safety technologies like Blind Spot Warning, Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert come standard on all Outlander models, while Adaptive Cruise Control and MI-PILOT Assist are available on SE trims and above.
Like Outlander, all 2022 Outlander Sport models also come standard with a rearview camera, Active Stability Control, and Hill Start Assist, but its the advanced safety and driver-assistive features make this compact SUV stand out. Even though Blind Spot Warning is only available on SE models and above, every 2022 Outlander Sport trim level is outfitted with Automatic High Beam, Forward Collision Mitigation, and Lane Departure Warning systems.
The question isn’t necessarily which of these SUVs is better—it’s what are your current vehicle needs? Both the 2022 Outlander and 2022 Outlander Sport offer a great deal of value for your money with well-appointed interiors, plenty of amenities and technology, modern styling, and Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) available at nearly every trim level. Outlander Sport is ideal for smaller families with its compact size, maneuverability, and versatile cargo areas.
